These activities are perfect for developing gross motor skills, encouraging imaginative play, and burning off that boundless energy—all while celebrating the beauty of autumn! Get ready to jump, twirl, and rustle with these engaging ideas.
The “Whirling Wind” Dance
What You’ll Need.
Leaves: Real ones (if clean and dry), or artificial ones. Paper cut-outs work too!
Scarves: Lightweight, colorful scarves are excellent for mimicking falling leaves.
Optional Seasonal Props: Small pumpkins, pinecones, or even autumn-colored blocks.
Music: Upbeat, happy tunes that encourage movement.
Imagine you are a gust of wind, swirling leaves all around!
How to Play: Give each child a light scarf. Put on some lively, flowing music. Instruct the children to move around the room, making their scarves “dance” like leaves caught in a gentle breeze.
Variations: Shout out different “wind speeds”—”Gentle Breeze!” (slow, floaty movements), “Strong Gust!” (fast, energetic twirls), “Swirling Tornado!” (spinning in circles). Encourage them to lift their scarves high, sweep them low, and make them float.
Skills: Gross motor coordination, spatial awareness, rhythm, imaginative play.
“Leaf Pile” Jumps
Who doesn’t love jumping into a giant pile of leaves? How to Play: Scatter a good number of real or artificial leaves (or paper leaf cut-outs). Place on the floor in a designated “pile” area. Play energetic music. Encourage the children to run, hop, or skip around the room. When the music stops, they must quickly run and jump into the “leaf pile!”
Variations: Ask them to jump like a “bouncing acorn” or “leaping squirrel” into the pile. You can also hide a “secret acorn” (a small pinecone or toy) in the pile for them to find after their jump.
Skills: Jumping, running, listening skills, following instructions, spatial awareness, balance.
“Gather the Autumn Treasure” Race
This game gets little bodies bending, stretching, and scurrying! How to Play: Place several small “autumn treasures” (leaves, pinecones, small pumpkins) scattered around the room. Give each child a small basket or bucket. When you say “Go!”, they race to collect as many treasures as they can, putting them in their basket.
Variations: Designate specific “treasures” for each child to collect (e.g., “Only find the red leaves!”). Or, for a cooperative game, have them work together to fill one large basket.
Skills: Bending, reaching, running, carrying, hand-eye coordination, and counting (if they count their treasures).
“Falling Leaf” Slow Motion
This game focuses on balance, control, and mindful movement.
How to Play: Give each child a leaf (real or artificial). Have them hold it up high. On your count, they pretend to be a leaf slowly falling from a tree. They move as slowly and gracefully as they can towards the floor, eventually lying down gently, just like a leaf settling on the ground.
Variations: Ask them to fall like a “spiral leaf” (slowly spinning down), a “wobbly leaf” (balancing on one foot then the other), or a “floating leaf” (arms outstretched, swaying gently).
Skills: Balance, body control, slow and controlled movement, concentration, and imaginative play.
“Pumpkin Patch Obstacle Course”
Combine your leaves with other seasonal props for a mini-adventure!
How to Play: Create a simple obstacle course using cushions to step over, a “river” of blue scarves to jump across, and a “pumpkin patch” (area with small pumpkins/blocks) to weave through. Incorporate leaves by having children collect a leaf at one point and carry it to another, or tiptoe across a “crunchy leaf path” (a line of leaves).
Example Course:
Crawl under a blanket (tunnel).
Step over two cushions.
Jump across a “leaf river” (a line of leaves on the floor).
Weave around 3 small pumpkins.
Finish with 5 “squirrel jumps” (quick little jumps in place).
Skills: Agility, coordination, problem-solving, following a sequence of instructions, gross-motor skills.
